what is happy homemaking and why is there an art to it?
The art of happy homemaking is one you can be able to have a sense of pride in. It’s not the most glamourous job in the world, but to me, it’s the most fulfilling. There is an art to homemaking, you may not see it, but, I do. Homemaking means a woman who stays at home full time to take care of her house and her family.
I think you can be also a homemaker if you work and still do these things for your family, it’s all in what you think. So, there is an art to caring for your home and family. It’s the skill of turning a house into a home, making it a place to reside and have relationships, rather than just a place to sleep.
Cleaning your home, cooking beautiful meals for your family, homesteading, growing your own food, the list goes on. It’s a beautiful and simple way of life like God intended.
how to be happy in homemaking
Some women are homemakers but cannot find the joy in it. It can get tiresome doing the same thing day after day, but, it’s all in your mindset. There are many ways to take joy in your homemaking. To start, here are a few easy ways to get you happy in your homemaking:
Get dressed up every day
When you dress nicely every day instead of lounging around in sweatpants, it makes your whole mindset change. Dressing up every day has been proven to change ones mood, you look great and you feel great. You have a reason to get things done because you’re dressed for the job!
Have a routine
When you have an effective routine every day/week, it can help lighten your load of stress. You know what day you have to do certain things on, and when you have to do it. When you have lack of a routine, it leads to more anxiety, stress and a heavy mental load. Having a routine clears your mind and gives you more time to relax.
Cook beautiful meals
Y’all know there is absolutely an art to cooking and baking, so take pride in it! Make those amazing meals from scratch for your family, bake that wonderful loaf of sourdough bread, anything you can make from scratch to provide for your family with your own hands.
Connect with your partner/kiddos
When you have a routine, that means you have more time to connect with your loved ones. Take some time out of your day to really connect and form that strong relationship with the people in your home. It doesn’t have to be long if every one is so busy, but taking the time to do that is so important. It will bring so much joy to your day.
surround yourself with beautiful things and smells
Another art of happy homemaking means when you surround yourself with beautiful things and smells, you automatically feel so much joy and pride in your work. Here are a few things you can do to have beauty around you:
Light a candle, wax melts, or have essential oils going
Our scent is the strongest of our 5 senses and research shows that 75% of all emotions are developed through smell. When you’re exposed to pleasant aromas, it lifts your mood by 40%. Wax melts are also a wonderful thing to have around, I get these all natural wax melts from a local lady who handmakes all of her melts. Additionally, they are zero waste too, she knows the way to my heart. We haven’t smelled a melt of hers we didn’t like!
Have fresh flowers around
Placing fresh flowers around our home is one of my favorite things to do. Whether it’s fresh flowers from the store, or fresh roses from our many rosebushes, I like to have them around everywhere. I see them and they instantly lift my mood, beautiful flowers make my day so my better. I’m starting to grow our own wildflowers, so soon enough I will be placing flowers I’ve grown in our home.
Clean!!
Having a clean home is a surefire way to a beautiful one. When your home is clean, so is your mind and spirit. If you’re like me, you feel a great sense of accomplishment when your home is sparkling. I despise walking on floors barefoot that have little crunchies everywhere, and I have to constantly wipe my feet. It makes me so joyful when the floors are free of crumbs. You have to find that one thing to clean that brings you joy, and to keep it clean.
take time for yourself
With the full schedule of homemaking, you can absolutely find time for yourself whether you have children or not. There are so many ways you can take a little bit of time for yourself, research shows it’s amazing for mental health when you care for yourself. It doesn’t have to be expensive at all. A few ways you can do this is:
- Read that book you’ve been wanting to try
- Go out for an evening alone, with a friend, or your spouse
- Schedule a night for takeout or leftovers. No cooking!
- Give yourself an at home spa night
- Make a charcuterie board with all your favorites
- Plant flowers or attend to your garden
- DIY something new for your home
- Spend time with God
- Organize that junk drawer that’s been eating away at you
- Take a walk or bike ride at the park
- Sit on the front porch with a cup of tea or coffee
- Buy yourself flowers (but you don’t have to write your name in the sand miley!!)
- Make your favorite meal
There are so many little things you can do to care for yourself and give yourself the little break you need. It doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant, you can simply sit on the front porch with your favorite drink listening to nature. Find the time for you and the activity that fits you best. A happy wife/mom is a happy life. When the woman is happy, everyone is happy (haha! but seriously…).
Continually learn new things
A huge part of learning the art of happy homemaking is constantly learning new things, ideas and ways to live. I’ve learned so many things already on my short journey of happy homemaking. Learning things is definitely a form of art. So far, I’ve learned how to make our own butter from raw milk, I’ve learned the ins and outs of sourdough starter and bread, gardening, drying herbs, making our own cleaning products, cooking from scratch, and more.
Being able to take joy in learning new skills that you can provide for your family with your own two hands. Whether that be sewing their clothes, making butter from scratch, or crocheting a blanket.. As long as you learn, you will be so happy. I am currently in the process of learning as much as I can, but only taking on so much I can handle. It’s important to take your time and really learn that skill before moving onto the next so you don’t get overwhelmed.
There is nothing quite like being able to make a home with your own hands, bringing in fruits and veggies you’ve grown, or something as simple as hanging clothes out on the line. Homemaking is a quiet and simple life, not extravagant. It’s the act of loving and caring for your family in a way that most people would deem not socially acceptable. God calls women to be the keepers of the home. If you work, that’s okay! God still calls us to take care of our families in the best way we can.
