My great grandma used to make the best southern cornbread recipe around. So, I have been bequeathed her recipe and I would love to share it with y’all. She has gone on to be with the Lord now but, I keep her memory alive with her wonderful recipes.
Things you’ll need for the southern cornbread recipe:
- yellow cornbread mix
- buttermilk
- egg
- shortening
- measuring cups
- medium sized bowl
- whisk
- spoon
- skillet
There are only a few items that you need and those are some of my favorite types of recipes. Simple, yet delicious.
How to make the cornbread:
First off, you’ll want to start off by heating up your oven to 425. Once your oven has heated, place your cast iron skillet in the oven with about 2 tbsp of shortening. Let that heat for about 7-8 minutes or until it’s hot. I normally let mine heat up while I’m mixing everything together.
Secondly, you’ll start by taking your medium sized bowl and placing one egg in it and beating the egg.
So, to your beaten egg, add in your buttermilk, oil/shortening, and cornmeal.
Once you’ve mixed everything thoroughly and it’s all smooth, it’s ready to go. If it’s too clumpy and thick, add in 1-2 TBSP more of the buttermilk.
Next, remove your cast iron skillet from the oven. Pour in your cornbread mixture into the hot oil in the skillet, and bake at 425 for 20 minutes.
You will know your southern cornbread is finished when the top is a beautiful golden brown. So, after the 20 minutes is up, make sure it’s golden brown.. if it is, remove from the oven. If it’s not golden brown, bake it for 5 more minutes. Just keep a check on it during that 5 minutes to make sure it’s not burning.
Once removed from the oven flip your cornbread onto a plate. My great-grandma used glass but, I used ironstone and it worked just as well.
Now, you have made my great-grandmas southern cornbread recipe. Serve hot with a nice chunk of butter or add it into your pinto beans.
You can also eat it plain or, if you’re like me, mix it in some buttermilk with salt and pepper. That’s how I used to eat it with my great-grandma when she would make it. I KNOW it sounds gross, but, I grew up on it here in the south so it’s delicious to me!

Cornbread is one of my favorites! But always has sugar, so I love that this doesn’t! Is this more sweet or savory?
thelocalwillow
It is definitely more savory! I love sweet cornbread, but this one is not sweet and great to add onto meals. My great grandma was onto something with this recipe!
