Enjoy this easy recipe on how to make your own, natural bug spray. Great for keeping the bugs away and mosquitoes off your skin. Kid friendly recipe inside as well!
If you’re anything like me reading this post, then you know that you must be a sweet treat for bugs. It never fails, every summer I will have red itchy spots everywhere! Not since making this super easy repellent spray. They stay far away from my tasty legs now.
It’s so easy and convenient to make, I much prefer it to the nasty drug store bug sprays. I at least know what I am putting on my skin… you never know nowadays.
In this post I will be showing you my recipe on how to make your own bug spray.
Why make your own?
Well, for me, when I can make my own natural products that work, it’s a win for me. I know what ingredients are going onto my skin and into my bloodstream. If I can make a bug spray (that works) with only a few natural ingredients, I’m going to do that instead.
THINGS YOU’LL NEED:
- A 2 OZ blue or amber glass spray bottle (do not use clear! the essential oils need to be in the colored glass)
- 2 TBSP of Filtered or Distilled water
- 2 TSP Rubbing alcohol or witch hazel
- 10 drops Peppermint oil, 10 drops Clove, and 10 drops Eucalyptus essential oil. (you can also use a larger variety of essential oils but these are what I had on hand. It still works like a charm. I love adding Lavender oil)
- (For a kid safe spray, use 5-10 drops of lavender oil, lemon and peppermint.)
Add all of your ingredients to the bottle and shake well before using! Spray all over and enjoy your itch free legs.
Tips for using the natural bug spray:
Shake well before using because well you know, oil and water don’t mix.
Avoid spraying in your eyes, mouth or face in general.
For children under 2 years old, don’t spray it directly on their skin. Instead spray it onto their clothing.
Use a glass spray bottle. You can use plastic but it won’t keep as long and it’s not as natural as glass. (See why I love using glass products in my zero waste product post here)
You can use rubbing alcohol or witch hazel if you have it on hand.
Use distilled or filtered water, not tap!

Great! I love the amendment for the children’s version, that’s helpful, thank you!
