Hey y’all, today I wanted to share with you my home apothecary and my must-haves. Have you wanted to delve into the herbalism world but you’re not sure where to start? Look no further, I got you. While the world of herbalism and building your home apothecary seems daunting, it’s so simple. The key is to start small and to build on what you already have. In this post, I will be sharing the supplies needed in order to start your apothecary. Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
Items You’ll Need For Your Home Apothecary
While the list may seem long, this is a very easy list of things to grab to get you started. So, I have so many different tools I use… I will be showing you the ones I started out with. The first and probably the second most important (the first being herbs) part of your home apothecary is books.
Books
Books on herbalism are the best way to gain so much knowledge into the world of herbalism. While there are so many books to choose from, it’s trial and error to see which books you like and that are your style. Books I loved, others may not have loved. It doesn’t hurt to have multiple books on herbalism and cross-reference them in the different books to get your final answer. The books I started with in my home apothecary were The Lost Book of Herbal Remedies by Claude Davis and Rosemary Gladstar’s Medicinal Herbs. Those two are great starter books!
Glass jars
Glass jars are so important to keep your herbs in. Herbs left in plastic baggies have a very shortened lifespan. It’s best to keep the herbs in glass and a cool dark place. If you don’t have that, amber jars are your best bet. I reuse spaghetti jars, mason jars, and I thrift jars from all over. It doesn’t have to be expensive!
Chalkboard stickers and pen
You’re going to want to label those jars so you know exactly what’s in that jar when you go to use it. I like to use the chalkboard pens and stickers so I can wipe them off when I get a different herb in that jar.
A funnel
While it’s not a dire need, it sure does make your life a lot easier! When you’re trying to pour your herbs into the jar, you’d rather all the herbs go into the jar rather than on the floor. Ask me how I know!
A place to store your herbs and supplies

I have an herbal shelf cabinet in our dining room. You may have seen it on TikTok or in magazines! But, it’s in a very dark area of our home so I don’t have to worry about the herbs being in a sunny environment. If you have even just a kitchen cabinet shelf you can make room for, that would be perfect as well.
Building a home apothecary doesn’t have to be aesthetically pleasing and expensive, all that matters is that you’re promoting a healthier lifestyle. The way God intended! I hope this has given you some help and inspiration for your own home apothecary! Thanks for stoppin’ by!
