When it comes to hanging curtains, I like to try to hang them without rods and drilling. These adorable cafe curtains are the easiest way to hang them without drilling. I’m not big on drilling and making holes, I change my mind too much regarding decor. So, I like to move things around and redecorate quite frequently. Freshening up our home with decor that doesn’t make permanent changes is one thing I absolutely love to do.
The windows in our kitchen are huge! However, I did not want curtains covering the whole window. I knew for sure they would block out a lot of our light coming in. I love natural light filling our home with warmth and natural beauty. It adds such happiness and joy to our home. So, I wanted to get some cafe curtains, I knew they would hang right where I wanted, but still give us the privacy I need at night. I love the look and homey feel these bring to our farmhouse kitchen.
When I found out I could hang these cafe curtains without rods, I was super excited. While there are many creative ways and rod ideas for hanging your curtain panel, this is what I have found to be the perfect way for me.
Different types of rods you can use to hang your curtains
Here is a list of many ways you can hang your curtains without traditional rods. They’re very creative and add a unique look, but they work! Especially if you’re in a pinch and don’t want to use traditional curtain rods.
Also, you can use these ideas with command strips, command hooks, a stick-on curtain rod, and if you have a metal place to add curtains, these magnetic curtain rods. They’re the perfect solution to add curtains without any wall damage.
If you like a plain look, tension rods are going to be the best option for you. They come in so many colors, looks, and sizes! They also look so lovely in a window.
For the sports lover:
Golf clubs, hockey sticks, and baseball bats are all great and creative options to use as curtain rods. For the golf clubs, you could always add golf balls to the club too! Just grab some self-adhesive hooks and hang them on the top of the window. Bam, perfect and inexpensive DIY hanging curtains without rods.
For the natural look lover who wants to add a touch of nature:
Tree branches, copper pipes, and PVC pipes are all great options for makeshift curtain rods! I love the natural look these give off as well. However, I will soon be grabbing some copper piping from one of our local hardware stores and using this method for the windows on our doors. Additionally, I also have some leftover linen that I may make some curtains with as well!
Ways to spice up your DIY curtain rod
These are some great ways to hang your curtains with something other than a regular curtain rod. With PVC pipes, copper pipes, or tree branches, you can always add decorative ends. Spice them up with some classy drawer pulls, plastic animals (for the kids’ room), or even a vintage-looking doorknob.
There are so many creative ways to add special hardware to the ends of your DIY curtain rods. Check out your local home decor store, fabric store, or hardware store. You’ll find so many creative ideas at some of these places! I know when I walk into Joanns or Hobby Lobby, they always have very interesting-looking “vintage” decor. At Hobby Lobby, they have the most wonderful selection of vintage-inspired door knobs and trinkets.
Different methods for hanging your DIY curtain rod
As I stated above, Command hooks and strips are a great way to hang your different types of rods. You can also use these self-adhesive curtain hooks that also work wonderfully. So, whether you’re using heavyweight curtains or lightweight, you can use any rod. All that matters is what weight support your hooks have. If needed, you can add multiple hooks to the sides of the window frame for added support.
All of these require no skill, no drilling, and no mess to hang your curtains.
Use hooks, rings, or clips for hanging your curtains
So, what I am doing to hang my cafe curtains, I am using curtain rings with clips! They make attaching your curtains to your rod of choice so easy.
You can also use curtain hooks if your curtains have holes and are designed for a traditional curtain rod. They are a great and easy solution for adding curtains to your rod of choice.
Hanging my curtains without a real curtain rod
For this DIY project, all you have to do is measure the length of your window and use tension rods. It is such an inexpensive way to add your own personal style to your window treatments.
So then, after I measured my windows with a tape measure, I checked out all the different sizes of hanging curtains. I picked the perfect option for our kitchen windows, I grabbed these adorable linen cafe curtains. They sit perfectly where I want them on our window. Then, I picked up the curtain rings with clips. Amazon has so many great options with a variety of colors.
Once I ordered my tension rod, linen cafe curtains, and curtain rings, it was so easy to put together. They’re slightly sheer curtains, but, they add enough privacy at night. This option is for lightweight curtains and not heavier curtains such as blackout curtains.
During the seasons, I will be changing them out for these tie-up cafe curtains. I think the tie-up hanging curtains would add such a cozy feel to our home.
For the fall and wintertime, I would love to change them out to slightly thicker curtains. Honestly, making my own hanging curtains also sounds like a great alternative. I love making things for our home, it adds such a personal touch to a handmade home.
