With this easy sausage and potato skillet dinner recipe, your family and your wallet will sure love it. It’s such an easy and quick recipe you can whip up on the fly. It has quickly become a southern comfort food in our home and I am sure it will become one in yours.
Things you’ll need for your sausage and potato skillet recipe:
- Cast iron skillet
- Stainless steel pan or another cast iron skillet
- Wooden spatula
- Knife
- Bacon grease
- 5 potatoes (you can peel them or leave the peel on. I left them on)
- 1 onion
- 1 package of kielbasa
- Cheddar cheese
- Pepper
- Morton Nature’s Seasons seasoning blend
How to make the recipe:
First, you will start by cutting up your potatoes and your onion. I like to make the potato slices pretty small so they can get more soft quickly.
Then, you will heat up your skillet to medium-high with 3 TBSP of bacon grease. Once your bacon grease has melted completely, carefully add in your potatoes and onions to the skillet. You’ll want to mix them up and make sure they are all coated with the bacon grease.
If you see you need more bacon grease, feel free to add a TBSP more.
Then, place a lid on top of the potatoes and onions. Cook for about 10 minutes while stirring every few minutes.
While the potatoes and onions are cooking, slice up your kielbasa sausage. Cook it on medium high with about 2 TBSP of bacon grease. Be sure to flip the kielbasa and make sure it’s brown on both sides.
Once it has browned, add it to your onions and potatoes.
Add your spice – you can always measure with your heart
Now, it’s time for the fun part. Add your Morton Nature’s Seasons seasoning blend and your pepper. Don’t be shy with it, season that baby up! Once you’ve added your spices, mix it around to thoroughly incorporate.
Next, return the lid and cook for an additional 5 minutes or until the potatoes are soft. I like to cook it until my potatoes are slightly falling apart. That’s when I know they’re good.
Once your potatoes are soft, it’s time for the cheese. Here, you can go wild like you did with the seasoning. You can add as little or as much cheese as you like. However, I’m lactose intolerant but I will SUFFER for some cheese… I just can’t quit cheese, y’all.
So, now you will return the lid to the skillet, remove from the heat, and let it sit for 15 minutes. This 15 minutes is crucial! You want it all to meld together and incorporate nicely.
Serve up your hot sausage and potato skillet meal!
After the 15 minutes are up, serve while it’s hot. You can add on extra cheese or extra spice if you would like.
My husband loves this meal and so do I! It’s such an affordable, yet delicious meal. A true southern comfort food. I bet you could also serve this with some delicious from scratch cornbread!
