Hey y’all, today I’m going to be showing you how to make this EASY homemade croutons recipe with leftover sourdough bread. Making croutons is a great way to use up your leftover bread, especially if you have stale bread and you want to cut down on food waste.
So, instead of that big loaf of stale sourdough bread just sitting on the counter, make them into your own homemade croutons! This is also a wonderful way to use up an over abundance of sourdough bread you have, stale or not!
I like to make these crunchy croutons to add to my favorite soups and my favorite salads. There’s nothing like being able to make something yourself with only simple ingredients instead of running to get store-bought croutons.
So, let’s get into how you can make your own flavorful croutons to add to your creamy soups, tomato soup, and salads.
How To Make Homemade Sourdough Croutons
When I say these are so easy it feels almost silly to write a whole post about them… they’re so simple! Here are the few tools and ingredients you will need for this basic crouton recipe:
Tools you will need:
Baking sheet
Parchment paper
Large bowl
Large spoon
Ingredients you will need:
Stale sourdough sandwich bread or old sourdough bread
Olive oil (or avocado oil)
Italian seasoning
Garlic powder
Salt (kosher salt or Celtic sea salt)
Black pepper
Onion powder
To start, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat your oven to 350.
Next, take your loaf of bread and cut your loaf into cubes. Additionally, you can make them larger or smaller, I opted for smaller cubes. You can use a serrated knife for this or a bread knife. I bought a bread knife at my local antique store and it works so well. But, you can use whatever you have on hand that’s serrated.
Then, add your sourdough bread cubes, olive oil, and seasonings in a large bowl. Make sure you mix all of these ingredients well, coating all of the bread cubes with olive oil and seasonings.
Pour the bread cube mixture onto the prepared baking sheet or sheet pan and bake for 15-20 minutes or until they are dry and golden brown. Make sure you place them in a single layer so they don’t overcrowd.
Once they are finished, let them cool to room temperature, and then place your fresh croutons in an air-tight container.
This is honestly such a perfect way to make your own croutons. So delicious and easy, with just the ideal amount of a little crunch.
How To Store Homemade Croutons & How Long They Last
To store your homemade croutons with leftover sourdough bread, you can place your croutons in an airtight container. They will last up to two weeks in an airtight container.
If you have some leftover croutons that you don’t want to go to waste, you can freeze them! I just place them in my favorite reusable freezer bags (I talk about them ALL the time because they’re so wonderful to have around) and place them in the freezer. Also, freezing homemade croutons will last 4-6 weeks in the freezer. So, just make sure you use them up before then! However, when you’re ready to use them, just set them out and let them thaw to room temperature.
Variations You Can Do With These Croutons
While there are SO many options and add-ins you can do to this recipe, here are a few ideas.
Fresh herbs of your choice
Fresh garlic
Melted butter
Use French bread
Red pepper flakes for some spice
Or, make some homemade ranch dressing to dip them in!
